Tips for Speaking Well with Dentures
If you’ve just started wearing removable or permanent dentures, you might have experienced unexpected changes in the way you speak. Even the best dentures can feel awkward and make speaking more difficult until you become accustomed to them. Your voice may seem different, and you might have problems with words containing S’s and F’s. If you wear removable dentures, they may produce clicking sounds when you speak. Fortunately, these problems diminish as you become accustomed to wearing your affordable quality dentures.
Here are a few tips to help you adjust:
- Don’t panic if you notice that your voice sounds different or louder—this is to be expected. When you talk, the sound of your voice reaches your ears when vibrations travel through the bones of your jaw and skull. Because dentures alter the anatomy of your oral cavity, they increase and alter the sound. The difference is much more noticeable to you than to anyone hearing your voice from the outside.
- Try to speak more slowly if you hear clicking sounds when you speak; this will avoid excess movements that lift or otherwise move your lower denture. Keeping the lower denture stable requires help from the muscles in your lips, tongue, and cheeks. These muscles may attempt to kick your denture out of place at first, but in time, they will adjust to the new configuration.
- Bite down gently and swallow before speaking to keep your dentures in the correct position. If you have a problem with frequent slipping, try using a denture adhesive that your dentist recommends.
Practice speaking when you are alone to help yourself talk with more confidence. Read text aloud, and repeat words that you have trouble pronouncing. Daily speech practice will help you learn the speed at which you can talk comfortably without denture problems.
