Follow a More Comprehensive Tooth Brushing Routine

Many people underestimate the importance of proper tooth brushing. Although you know it is a habit never to be forgotten, you rarely consider the impact missing just one tooth brushing session can have on your health or how much dental care technique has to do with efficacy. You may have been brushing your teeth long before you could utter the word, “toothbrush,” but do you still put the proper amount of time, energy, and thoroughness into the habit as you once did? Probably not. You’re not alone, however; most people need a refresher course, so use this guide to keep your tooth brushing habits highly effective.

Good tooth brushing habits begin with the right tools:

  1. Adults should use a toothbrush that properly fits their teeth. If you have large teeth, purchase a toothbrush with a fuller head, while those with smaller teeth may benefit from smaller toothbrush heads. Children should always use toothbrushes specially designed for kids. All toothbrushes should be ADA approved.
  2. Choose only toothpaste approved by the ADA. Look for toothpaste that includes fluoride and has the ADA seal of approval. Some children’s toothpastes may have low or no fluoride because amounts of fluoride exposure should be minimal up to the age of six to avoid tooth discolorations.
  3. Use mouthwash after brushing. Adults and adolescents can remove excess bacteria and debris by rinsing with an ADA-approved fluoride mouthwash after every brushing. Ask your family dentist before allowing young children to use mouthwash.
  4. Consider an electric toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes have been shown to deliver better cleaning results than manual toothbrushes.
  5. Use floss daily. Whether you choose string floss or dental picks, removing debris from between teeth is essential to good dental care. Choose ADA-approved floss and strive to floss at least once a day before brushing.
  6. Replace your toothbrush every three months or when it becomes gnarled— whichever comes first.

With the right technique, a thorough brushing can be very effective:

  • Brush at least twice a day for two minutes. Divide the mouth into quadrants and spend at least 30 seconds brushing each quadrant on all sides. Don’t neglect the inside or chewing surfaces of any teeth.
  • Brush after every meal if possible; however, wait at least 20 minutes following eating to prevent spreading acids around the mouth that cause tooth decay.
  • Don’t skip a tooth brushing session. Studies have shown that missing even one tooth brushing session of the recommended two per day can increase your risk of chronic disease by as much 70 percent.
