What to Expect when Adjusting to New Dentures

Adjusting to new dentures or partials takes time, practice and patience. Dentures and partials are an important part of your dental care and maintaining your quality of life. An adjustment period following new dentures or partials is common. You may have to visit your dentist several times over the course of the first few weeks as you transition to living with dentures or partials. Eating and speaking are the most commonly affected activities. However, there are expert-recommended exercises and food choices to help you more easily make the transition back to comfortable eating and speaking with dentures or partials.

Eating – In the beginning, it may seem complicated to eat with dentures or partials, but soon it will become second nature. With practice and time, you’ll start to feel comfortable eating with your new dentures. To start the progression toward normal eating with your dentures or partials, follow these tips:

  • Eat soft foods that are easy to chew and simple to swallow. Eggs, fish, cheese, chopped meat, cooked vegetables, and ice cream are good examples.
  • Take small bites and chew thoroughly—be careful to avoid biting  down with your front teeth.
  • Avoid chewing gum and sticky food items.

Within a month or two of wearing your dentures or partials regularly, you’ll find that  comfortable eating will resume. When you’re comfortable, you can begin to add more foods to your diet, focusing on nutritious foods such as lean meats, vegetables, and fruits.

During the adjustment period, you may want to use a denture adhesive to increase your comfort and confidence. Denture adhesives will seal out pieces of food, such as popcorn, that can get stuck between your teeth.

Remember that it takes time and patience to adjust to your dentures or partials, but with regular wearing, you’ll quickly get back to your normal eating habits.

Speaking – Along with having to relearn how to eat a variety of foods with ease, you may have difficulty speaking clearly as you begin wearing dentures or partials, which is normal.  Most people struggle with the “F” or “S” sounds, but learning to speak with dentures or partials usually occurs at a faster rate than eating does, because you have more opportunities to practice and improve. The following tips will help you transition to normal speech patterns with dentures or partials:

  • Make it a priority to practice speaking aloud when wearing your dentures or partials, whether you’re alone or with friends.
  • Read aloud every day to check your abilities with various words. Read from a magazine, newspaper, or book  in front of a mirror and watch your mouth movements, making adjustments as needed.
  • Some people find that it improves speech patterns if they bite down and swallow before beginning to speak, which can reduce any movement of dentures or partials.

Dentures or partials are designed to improve your confidence and quality of life. While it may be challenging to have to “relearn” eating and speaking, it’s well worth the transition when you once again feel comfortable interacting in social situations.
